  • Descrizione: On the day of the engagement of the kind young nobleman Dimitros to Maria, the daughter of the powerful ruler of the area Kostantis Matrozos, a fellow villager, Despo, is accused of stealing jewelry belonging to the Matrozos family. The deputy chief of Matrozos arrests her, but a bandit named Liapouras frees her and takes her with him to the mountains. Despo tells the truth to Liapouras: that Maria stole the man she loves, and, with her confidant, framed her as the thief. Dimitros decides to put off the engagement until he finds out what really happens, and Matrozos orders his stout–hearted men to bring Despo back, but she finds refuge in a monastery. When the old heart of Matrozos gives in, the ruler confesses the plot and asks for remission of his sins. He orders them to leave Despo alone, so she is now free to marry her beloved Dimitros.
